چکیده

The accepted wisdom is that combinational circuits must have acyclic (i.e., loop-free or feed-forward) topologies. And yet simple examples suggest that this need not be so. Prior work advocated the design of cyclic combinational circuits (i.e., circuits with loops or feedback paths). A methodology was proposed for optimizing circuits by introducing cycles at the technologyindependent stage of synthesis. Efficient synthesis is predicated on efficient analysis. Prior methods for analysis were based on binary decision diagrams (BDDs). In this paper, a much more efficient technique is proposed based on Boolean satisfiability (SAT). Validation is performed both at a network level, in terms of functional dependencies, as well as at a gate level, after mapping to a library. When mapping breaks the validity of a combinational circuit, SAT-based analysis returns satisfying assignments; these assignments are used to modify the mapping in order to ensure that the circuit remains combinational. The effectiveness of the analysis and mapping algorithms is demonstrated on standard benchmarks.

A The Synthesis of Cyclic Dependencies with Boolean Satisfiability1

The accepted wisdom is that combinational circuits must have acyclic (i.e., feed-forward) topologies. Yet simple examples suggest that this is incorrect. In fact, introducing cycles (i.e., feedback) into combinational designs can lead to significant savings in area and in delay. Prior work described methodologies for synthesizing cyclic circuits with sum-of-product (SOP) and binary-decision dia...

Local negative circuits and cyclic attractors in Boolean networks with at most five components

We consider the following question on the relationship between the asymptotic behaviours of Boolean networks and their regulatory structures: does the presence of a cyclic attractor imply the existence of a local negative circuit in the regulatory graph? When the number of model components n verifies n ≥ 6, the answer is known to be negative. We show that the question can be translated into a B...

Cyclic Boolean circuits

A Boolean circuit is a collection of gates and wires that performs a mapping from Boolean inputs to Boolean outputs. The accepted wisdom is that such circuits must have acyclic (i.e., loop-free or feed-forward) topologies. In fact, the model is often defined this way – as a directed acyclic graph (DAG). And yet simple examples suggest that this is incorrect. We advocate that Boolean circuits sh...

Algorithms for Satisfiability in Combinational Circuits Based on Backtrack Search and Recursive Learning

Boolean Satisfiability is a ubiquitous modeling tool in Electronic Design Automation (EDA). It finds application in test pattern generation, delay-fault testing, combinational equivalence checking and circuit delay computation, among many other problems. Moreover, Boolean Satisfiability is also in the core of algorithms for solving Binate Covering Problems. This paper starts by describing how B...

A Fast and Self-Repairing Genetic Programming Designer for Logic Circuits

Usually, important parameters in the design and implementation of combinational logic circuits are the number of gates, transistors, and the levels used in the design of the circuit. In this regard, various evolutionary paradigms with different competency have recently been introduced. However, while being advantageous, evolutionary paradigms also have some limitations including: a) lack of con...
